Pirates Sign DB Markel Roby
ORLANDO, FL - The Orlando Pirates have signed veteran defensive back Markel Roby. For the last three seasons Roby has been in the United Football League with Houston.

In 2024 the former Pittsburg State safety played in ten games for the Roughnecks making 52 tackles. He added one sack with three interceptions with eight passes broken up with one forced fumble. In 2025 he followed that up with 44 tackles in seven games while adding one sack. This season he played in the first game of the season for the re-branded Gamblers and made one tackle before his release. Roby then signed with the San Antonio Toros of the Continental Football League before coming to the Pirates.
The 5'11", 200 lb. native of New Orleans, LA played two seasons at Pittsburg State in Kansas. He saw action in four games with the Gorillas in 2020 making nine tackles with one interception. In 2021 he made seven starts with 40 tackles in 11 games. Roby added an interception and broke up two passes.
Roby was a two-time All-GPAC Honorable Mention Selection at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. In 2017 he led the Chargers with 71 tackles in ten games. He broke up six passes, had three tackles for a loss, forced one fumble and recovered two more. His signature game was a 15 tackle performance against Concordia. In 2018 he notched 58 tackles in 11 games and led his team with three interceptions. Roby also had four tackles for a loss and broke up three passes.
